AUDIENCE ATTITUDE TOWARDS YORUBA NEWS PRESENTATION ON OGUN STATE TELEVISION - A STUDY OF NEWS AUDIENCE IN IFO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND ISHERI LOCAL GOVERNMENT

ABSTRACT
The project work centered on attitudes of audience towards Yoruba news presentation on television in selected areas in Ifo and Isheri Local Government Area. In the study the researcher first, identified possible ways through which standard Yoruba language can be portrayed to the public.

In the first chapter the project pin points the introduction of Yoruba language, the background of the study, the statement of the problem of the study, the purpose of the limitations of the study, aimsand significanceof the study e.t.c.

More so, chapter two of this study covers the review of related literature on the use of Yoruba language on television stations. In addition Methodology and design, where questionnaire and data collect are equally analyzed and correlated with findings.

In the end, it was found that standard Yoruba language on television programmes actually had impact on viewers and so it is capable of positively changing the audience.

CHAPTER ONE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Television and radio are the electronic vehicles that transport million of persons each day to far away laces. They are the present day technological revolution that has been transforming much of the worlds for the past two centuries and their impact on our social, political and cultural life has been profound. The media also have tremendous impact on world civilization. Broadcasting started in Nigeria with the inception of wired broadcasting known as radio distribution service or reinfusion, developed in Great Britain by the British broadcasting corporation (BBC ).

Broadcasting came to Nigeria in pursuit of its colonial interest, Britain found if convenient to set-up an experimental radio receiving station inLagos. This was done in December 1932 to pick up short wave transmissions of the British broadcasting corporation empire service in 1974. Three years later the receiving station became a radio distribution station that is, a reinfusion centre extending beyond Lagos to London and Kaduna respectively, such that broadcasting wired service was taken gradually to other population centers.

Broadcasting came to Nigeria in 1949. Interestingly, Nigerian broadcasting service was inaugurated in 1957, accordingly, under the statutory corporation act (NBC NO 39 OF 1957) having fully achieved an independent status as a district government development. Broadcasting is defined as primarily, a medium for prompt delivery of information through carefully designed and selected programmes such as, cover news, music, drama and information. It is essential to inform and entertain and educate to protect culture, breakdown barriers and reduce the world to a global village.

1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Due to the controversy among audience that Yoruba news presentation has an impact on the broadcast media because Yoruba news presentation on television has a great impact on the audience. It informs, educate and entertain the audience especially those who do not understand Yoruba language very well, not because they are not Yoruba people but they do not understand Yoruba language well.

1.3 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
It is imperative to study the use of Yoruba language in the electronic media because it is the basis of understanding i.e. the educative and informative function of a media house in Nigeria and many other countries , rural communication are neglected, thereby understanding any programme that the government is aiming at them. Infact, in our country today, there are many electronic media houses that lack how to present interesting programmesto the society in Yoruba language. And for the progress of a nation educating people at the grass level must be done as this is one of the social responsibility of the media.

It is important to realize that the actual programme being broadcast to communities must be in the language they understand because the manner in which people apply information gathered from the media should be known. In order to do this, it will be necessary to examine the elements that aid the use of Yoruba language among the people in our electronic media, such elements are :

· Access to radio and television.

· Purpose of listening.

1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The primary aims of the study is to know the attitudinal section of Yoruba language news presentation programme with the following objective:

1.To examine the relevance of Yoruba language news presentation in electronicmedia.

2.To analyse the problem(s) that can be encountered by the listeners.

3. To find out if there could be modification in the use of Yoruba language in broadcasting

4. To know the purpose of listening

5. To know the effect of media communication system on the people.

1.5 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
This study intends to know the minds of the people in our society on the effect of Yoruba language and roles of the electronic media towards its uses. The population of the study which could cover areas in Ifo and Isheri Local Government Area and its environs will be examine to know the impact of electronic media on people speaking Yoruba as language in our society at large.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of the study is to expose the audience to have advantages of listening to news presentation in Yoruba language. Also to educate audience on different lessons that can be derived, from its news presentation, especially adults.

1.7 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
This study intends to test and conform or reject the following hypothesis:

*That the use of Yoruba language in programmes is meant for illiterate audience.

*That the use of Yoruba language is generally accepted by the people.

*Does television news have positive effect on the audience.

*Does the audience have access to television set.

*What has been the likely effect of Yoruba news presentation.

*Is there briefly good lesson from television, radio Yoruba language presentation.
