CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.7              Background to the Study

The  girl-child  of  today  becomes  the  woman  of  tomorrow.  At  various  stages  of

development the girl-child faces a lot of challenges emanating from family or community. Her acceptance and status in the society depends on a very large extent on the girl-child‘s ability to overcome the social challenges, performs expected roles and meet up with expectations. In Nigeria, the position of girls and women participation in education remains very low, in spite of government‘s effort to address the imbalance of the girl-child education.

Children in Nigeria are considered as gifts and blessings to the family. Their arrival is greeted with joy signifying the society‘s appreciation and gratitude. Many societies strive to equip such children into acquiring appropriate skills and training necessary for adjustment and performance of role expectations. The training is supposed to be provided on equal basis without regard to gender status.

However, the current trend in many societies especially in Igabi Local Government seem to indicate that the position of girls participation in education remain very low despite the popular saying that ―if you educate a man you educate an individual but if you educate a female you educate the nation as a whole‖. UNICEF (2004) report showed that Nigeria is one of the countries with lowest female literacy rate in the world. The girl-child‘s right to education is an economic, social, cultural and political right since people cannot fully realize their freedom without education. It is rather unfortunate that even now, the female especially in northern part of Nigeria, is denied equal access to education and several of them are exposed to harmful traditional practice like child trafficking and prostitution......
